Augmentin is a penicillin antibiotic.
Augmentin is composed of a mix of substances amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the drug group called penicillins. Amoxicillin, works by fighting the infection, while clavulanate potassium promotes its effect by inhibiting a certain type of enzyme called beta-lactamase. The drug is used in treatment of various types of infections, including those of urinary tract, sinus infections, and ear infections. The preparation, however is only used in treatment of susceptible infections.
What is Augmentin indicated for?
Augmentin usually comes in tablets, pills or syrup. Ordinarily, Augmentin Syrup is prescribed for children, because it is absorbed faster. Augmentin syrup also contains the inactive ingredients xanthum gum, aspartame, silicon dioxide, silica colloidal anhydrous, succinic acid, hypromellose and mixed fruit flavor.
Augmentin tablets are indicated in treatment of infections caused by amoxicillin resistant organisms producing beta-lactamases, which is sensitive to clavulanic acid, such include:
- Upper respiratory tract infections, such as sinusitis, recurrent otitis media, tonsillitis.
- Lower respiratory tract infections, like bronchitis or bronchopneumonia.
- Urogenital infections, such as cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis or skin and soft tissue infections.
Augmentin syrup is used in treatment of the same conditions as the tablets, they just come in different dosage and packs.
