Ciprofloxacin is an antibacterial drug in a group called fluoroquinolones, that is used to treat all the bacteria that cause infection in the body. It works by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.
Cipro is effective against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It works by interfering with an enzyme that bacteria need to replicate their DNA.
It is usually taken orally in the tablet form or injections. The determination of dosage for any particular patient must take into consideration the severity and nature of the infection. However, the drug’s use in children less than three months old still remains problematic because, although there are several reports of its use in this age group, there have not yet been any formal pharmacokinetic studies.
Do not take Cipro with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice. You may eat these products as part of a regular meal, but do not use them alone when taking Cipro. They will make the medication less effective.
